A General Discussion On Flooring, Its History And Types

Flooring is something which I guess, many consider a relatively new term. But, the factor of the matter is that the history of flooring is as old as civilization itself. Let’s do a brief study of history of flooring. Read on…

  1. During prehistoric times, that is, when man was a caveman, people resorted to the art of flooring in a rather unique way. They put waste and other refuse on the floor and compressed it. After that they put hay and straw on it and compressed it further. This made the floor warmer for winters. Sometimes animal skin too was used. Animal blood such as that of a slaughtered pig was used in order to level the surface along with the waste and hay.
  2. In North America there were some tribes, who threw sand on the surface and compressed it by walking on it. After this, they cleared the whole surface. They again threw a second layer of sand and compressed it further creating a flooring surface. In some European countries they leveled the floor with waste and refuse and compressed it just like their ancestors, the caveman did once. Sometimes they added mint to it in order to counter the bad odor. This type of flooring particularly was done in the rural areas.
  3. The ancient Egyptians were known for their building capacities. They were known to use mosaic flooring as early as the pre-biblical times. Mosaic flooring is a type of flooring in which different types of tiles are used for flooring purposes. The ancient Egyptians even used pebbles to make their floor decorative and concrete.
  4. In India too, people used a unique technique of flooring. They put colorful sands on the ground surface. Sometimes they used rice and flowers for decorative purposes. This form is called rangoli and is used in India till now.

One may see that flooring has gone through a sea of change from the prehistoric times. Although the basic technique of flooring is same as it was in the ancient times, science had added a touch of finesse to these ancient art of house decoration. Flooring in modern times can be divided into the following:-

  1. Carpet- Under it the floor is covered with fabric fibers. This keeps the ground snug and comfortable in the winters.
  2. Laminate- Under this plywood is used for flooring.
  3. Tile- As the name suggests stone tiles are used for flooring.
  4. Vinyl- Also, known as resilient flooring, such type of flooring are high on elasticity factor.

When we talk about laminate flooring we must point out to woodpecker flooring. Woodpecker flooring is best form of wooden flooring.
