Flooring can be defined as permanent covering of floor. It can be described as the finishing material applied to a floor structure for general walking purposes.

Before, we discuss anything else, let’s give a brief look at the history of flooring.

History of flooring

  • The very first floor or prehistoric floors, were perhaps those when the cavemen, at first leveled the structure before anything else. In some cases hay or straw was used to level up the surface and make it warmer for winters. Animal skin too was also used to provide some kind of filling. Sometimes waste or refuse was thrown in and walked over. This would compress down the solid coating surface. This system was basically followed in the rural areas. Animal blood was used to harden the surface. In some European countries, mint was added to counter act the smell of waste and refuse.
  • In North America, there were some tribes who threw sand on floor and compressed it by walking over them. After that they cleared the whole mess and again threw sand over the ground. They again compressed it and this way a new texture for flooring was created.
  • In ancient India floor designing was given a new twist with addition of colorful sand. They were mixed with rice powder and flower petals in order to decorate them. This form known as ‘rangoli’ is in use till now.
  • The ancient Egyptians were known for their building prowess. The Egyptians knew about mosaic flooring. Mosaic flooring means use of tiles of various sizes to remodel the floor. Even pebbles are used in order to increase the style quotient of the floor.

We can see that the history of flooring is quite elaborate. Flooring style has gone through different changes over time. Earlier methods of flooring have left their traces and is still in vogue in rural areas. The modern types of flooring can be broadly divided into following categories:-

  • Carpet- Carpet flooring is that sort of flooring when the floor is covered with carpet fibers. Such type of flooring provides quite a snug look and warmth in the winters.
  • Laminate- Under this type of flooring the floor is covered with plywood. This form of lamination is different with hardwood flooring.
  • Tile Flooring- As the name suggests tiles are used to cover the floors. Nowadays, different sizes of tiles are used to be used as flooring surfaces.
  • Vinyl flooring- It’s that sort of flooring which has some resilience or elasticity factor attached to it.

On this basis, we can say that flooring has accomplished a long journey in the history of mankind.
