Looking After Your Laminate Flooring
One of the greatest things about laminate flooring is that it is so easy to take care of, especially if you read on for some handy tips.
Laminate flooring is generally very resilient to scratching and warping, but cleaning it properly will also help to reduce the risks of potentially damaging substances building up on the surface. You should wipe over with a dry mop regularly or use a vacuum with a soft brush, but there are occasions when a more intensive approach may be needed.
Overall Cleaning
There are many effective yet gentle floor cleaners on the market which are likely to be the best option for a thorough clean that is guaranteed not to damage your laminate flooring, but there are also some other options if you run out of these. Try adding a small amount of mild detergent or even baby wash to a bucket of hot but not boiling water and then mop.
Whichever product you choose, make sure that you wring out your mop extremely well at the start. It should feel just damp in order to prevent excess water build-up. As long as you have done this properly, it should be fine to leave your floor to air-dry. If in doubt, dry thoroughly with a soft clean cloth.
Spot Stains
There are some simple solutions for removing stains and caked-on mud from your floors if you do not have one of the specialist recommended cleaning products in your cupboard. For some people, vinegar is the magical solution to every cleaning problem. Mix 60ml of white vinegar with 1000ml of water in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray on to small areas of your floor, no bigger than 30.5cm square, and wipe off almost immediately with a damp clean cloth, mop or sponge. Do not leave it for any longer, as it could damage the protective layer of your laminate flooring, and make sure it is thoroughly dry when you have finished.
Small scuffs and heel marks can usually be removed using a pencil eraser, but there are products on the market if this should fail. Meanwhile, for any greasy build-up try placing a bag of frozen peas or an ice pack on the spot until the grease hardens, and then simply scrape it off using the back of a plastic knife. Just be gentle to ensure that you do not cause any damage.
