General Care
Generally, we recommend vacuuming your rug on a weekly basis to remove any surface dirt and dust. This helps it to look great day-in-day-out and prevents surface dirt from becoming ingrained.
Avoid vacuuming tassels or fringes as this could pull on them and lead to permanent damage.
If you have a small rug, you could shake it out between vacuums when you’re sweeping your floor, for example.
We also recommend rotating your rug frequently to avoid any prolonged sun exposure or uneven wearing. Turning once a month is recommended, but you could always do it every time you vacuum if it helps you to remember!
Special Care By Rug Type
Shaggy Rugs
When vacuuming shaggy pile rugs we recommend using a small nozzle attachment on your vacuum to prevent damaging the pile. Depending on the suction of your hoover, it can be good to open the air valve which reduces suction. This will reduce the strain on the rug material.
Wool Rugs
A common characteristic of wool rugs is shedding, which is when the fibres come away from the rug. This is a natural and common feature of wool rugs, not a manufacturing fault. Gentle and regular vacuuming will take care of this and ensure your wool rug will last longer.
Wool is a natural fibre and therefore extra care should be taken when looking after a wool rug. Spillages should be cleaned immediately (see below) and avoid over wetting when cleaning.
Spills & Stains
It’s common for rugs in busy households to experience spills that could lead to stains. There are some steps to follow to help prevent spills causing lasting damage:
1. You should attend to any spills immediately, rather than allowing them to sit for any period on the rug. Use an absorbent clean cloth to soak up the liquid.
2. Apply luke warm water to the area and blot (don’t rub) with a clean cloth until the stain is removed. Avoid over wetting of the area – ensure the cloth is damp and not wet – as this can cause permanent damage. This process may need to be repeated several times to remove the stain.
3. For solid stains such as chewing gum or wax, remove the solid then repeat step 2.
A mild soap or detergent can be used to remove difficult stains, but this should be tested on a inconspicuous area first in case it reacts with the dyes in your rug and leaves a mark.
