Laminate Flooring and the Major Manufacturers

Hit the ground running when it comes to choosing laminate flooring by learning a little more about the businesses behind the brands.

You have made the decision to opt for a laminate floor, but how do you choose which kind to buy? Start by learning something about some of the major manufacturers behind the brands on the market today.

Quick-Step
Quick-Step flooring is produced and designed by the Unilin company, which was formed in Ooigem in Belgium in 1960. The firm, formed as collaboration between several families, originally produced flax chipboards but moved into wood in the 1970s as a result of a lack of readily available flax.

Quick-Step was launched in 1990, and the Unilin company claims it was the first manufacturer of its kind to put its own brand on the market and the first to sell laminate floors to consumers in Belgium. The firm is credited with inventing the patented Uniclic system in 1997, which allows laminate flooring to be laid without the need for glue or nails. This was updated in 2009 with the introduction of the Multifit system.

Krono Original and Kronoswiss
The German company Kronoflooring is a Kronospan Lampertswalde subsidiary that was founded in 2001. As well as Krono Original laminate flooring, the firm specialises in ceiling and wall panels. Its products are sold in 80 countries across the world, and it is based in Lampertswalde, Germany, in a facility spanning more than 360,000 square metres.

The Kronospan company specialises in the creation and distribution of wood-based panels, operating at 30 manufacturing sites and employing more than 11,000 workers. Its first base was an Austrian sawmill after the company was founded in 1897.

Kronoswiss is also part of the Krono stable but is specifically made by Kronospan Switzerland AG. Its manufacturing base was created in Menznau in the district of Willisau in 1966. Today, it employs 450 staff and produces the equivalent of 15 football fields’ worth of laminate flooring every day.

Aqua-Step
Parcolys is the company behind Aqua-Step, and it boasts of being the inventor and first producer of laminate flooring to be 100 percent water-resistant. The Parcolys company is based in Antwerp in Belgium, and over four decades has specialised in extrusion relating to building materials. The idea for Aqua-Step was formed in 1999 and the product was eventually launched in 2001.
